With my December graduation in sight and preparations in full swing for my upcoming Ride for 3 Reasons in early 2017, I find myself reflecting on how I got to this point.
The story begins in 2007, I was nine years old at the time, and the man speaking before my third grade class was Bob Lee, founder of the charity, Ride For 3 Reasons. He told captivating stories about his solo bicycle rides across the United States, which were organized to raise funds for cancer and ALS research, along with hospice awareness. That same night, I went home to tell my parents that one day, I too would ride my bicycle across the United States of America. Now today, nine years later, that same dream is about to become my reality.
Bob is for me what he is for many others: an inspiration and mentor. It was when Bob first asked me about the possibility of doing the ride–not just for myself, but for three reasons–that I realized not only could the ride benefit me, but it could have a positive impact for others far beyond myself.
With my February ride quickly approaching, I find myself reflecting on what it will mean to ride for the three causes, which the charity supports. These three reasons are just as much mine, as they are Bob’s, as they are all of yours. I’ve lost a grandfather to cancer, a dear family friend to ALS, and had a grandmother who received Hospice care. These are my three reasons and they are the reasons I am doing this ride. I believe that each of us is endowed with unique gifts and passions, and we have a responsibility to apply those for the betterment of others. If one or all of these causes has touched you, I hope you will consider giving a gift to the RIDE for 3 Reasons.
Our goal is to raise $600,000 to be shared by Les Turner ALS Foundation, Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center and National Hospice Foundation. For every dollar donated, two additional dollars are released from the “PaceSetter Fund” For every $1 you give, the charities receive $3!
RIDE for 3 Reasons / BADC is a 501(c) non-profit organization. Your donation will qualify as a charitable contribution to the extent allowed by law.
